  3. THE BISHOPS 
  4. In the medieval Parliament, the Lords Spiritual (bishops 
  5. and mitred abbots) made up about half the membership. 
  6. Today, they comprise solely the 26 representatives of the 
  7. Church of England: the Archbishops of Canterbury and 
  8. York, the Bishops of London, Durham, and Winchester, 
  9. and the 21 next most senior diocesan bishops.

  11. Other religious denominations do not have an automatic right
  12. to representation in the Lords, though that does not mean they
  13. are excluded. In 1988 the then Chief Rabbi, Dr Immanuel Jakobovits, was made a life peer - an appointment which was widely applauded.
